Of course, the UK has many shops and stores like Spain. Indeed, if you go into a shopping mall in Britain then it is quite likely to be very similar to commercial shopping centres that you will see in many parts of your own country.
However, there are some differences to shops in the UK and one of these is that we have newspaper and card shops. These are stacked with numerous newspapers and magazines and also have tens of thousands of cards – birthday cards, wedding cards, ‘get well’ cards, ‘I love you cards’, bereavement cards, invitation cards and so on.
Some shops only sell cards and these are incredible for the sheer volume of cards that they contain. Quite literally, you can find a card for every possible eventuality and occasion.
Meanwhile, Britain has a huge number of magazines and newspapers that are published weekly or monthly. Certainly, you can go to a newspaper shop and probably find a magazine on just about any topic that you can imagine.
I think the reason why we have so many newspapers and magazines in the UK revolves around the amount of commuting that people in Britain undertake. Millions of people go by train to work and back every day – sometimes travelling for two or more hours each way. Travelling like this every day is, of course, very boring! So, everyone tends to buy a newspaper or magazine in the mornings to read, whilst they are waiting for their trains or travelling on them…
Obviously, if you are going to live in Britain (and possibly travel to work and back!) then it makes sense to be able to read English well. In that case, your clases de inglés in Gandia – will not have been wasted!
