ST JAMES' CHURCH, SHERE, SURREY

ST JAMES' CHURCH, SHERE, SURREY

In every village in England, wherever you go, you will always find two things!  These are a church and a war memorial.

England is, of course, a Protestant country.  In fact, it has its own church called the Anglican Church – the head of which is the ruling monarch of England.  At present, therefore, Queen Elizabeth II is the head of the Anglican Church.

SHERE CHURCH

Although the Anglican church is a lot newer than the Catholic church, it does have some wonderful, very old churches – which, originally, would have been Catholic churches!  The one in the picture below is St James’ Church in Shere (Surrey) and it was built in 1190.

However, like Spain, although England has many churches – very few people go regularly to them!

The war memorials to be found in every village in England were built after the First World War (1914/1918).  They were built to commemorate the lives of the people from the village concerned – who had died in the First World War War.  Subsequent wars have meant that more names have, sadly, been added to these memorials.

WAR MEMORIAL, CRANLEIGH, SURREY

Every year, on the 11th November, parades are held everywhere in Britain at War Memorials to remember Britons killed in battle.  The 11th of November was chosen because it was the day that the First World War ended.  In fact, it ended exactly at 11 o’clock at night on the 11th month (November) of 1918.
